GCSE SPANISH KS3 FUTURE TENSE AR VERBS CONJUGATION PRACTICE 25 high-frequency Spanish AR verbs, 150 conjugation questions, 3 differentiated challenges, answer keys ideal for KS3 Spanish students who are beginning to work with compound sentences and longer texts, and generally developing their knowledge and understanding of conjugation and tense in Spanish. My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. The workbook focuses on the correct conjugation of verbs, rather than usage. For example, students with English as a first language do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in both languages, and we frequently see students getting a little confused by the absence of a direct equivalent of will, before they really grasp that the notion of future is indicated in the verb stem + relevant pronoun ending, which is an entirely new concept for learners. In turn, they often mix up future tense and conditional tense endings, and I find it really useful to look at both tenses fairly closely together so that students can compare and contrast both formation and usage. The resource is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: Spanish-English and English-Spanish, useful for longer-term reference too Three differentiated conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in Spanish across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in Spanish, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in Spanish. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding Spanish verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from a Spanish prompt. PRIMARY SPANISH KS3 VEGETABLES whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, perfect for practising, reinforcing & refreshing a range of vegetables in Spanish. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too - I point out particular phonemes, accents and sounds too - such as the tilde on the letter ñ, and how important that is in creating the correct sound of the word. The aim of the game is to create a Spanish sentence chain as quickly as possible, starting with Tengo la primera tarjeta, and ending with the final card, Tengo la última tarjeta. There are 28 vegetables featured in the game: artichoke; asparagus; aubergine; green beans; beetroot; broccoli; Brussels sprout; cabbage; carrot; cauliflower; celery; cucumber; garlic; leek; lettuce; mushroom; onion; peas; green pepper; red pepper; yellow pepper; potato; sweet potato; radish; spinach; sweetcorn; tomato; zucchini. All the vegetables may not be in my longer-term learning plan, but the learning objective moves beyond simply learning individual units of vocab - the images help students infer meaning from context, supported by the visual prompts and clues - this in turn supports them in developing their Spanish language skills in the longer and more complex sentences. There is implicit input on grammatical concepts such as adjectival agreement, gender, definite, indefinite and partitive articles and position of adjectives, either preceding or proceeding the particular noun. This is a very successful way of really getting the most of what looks like a straightforward game for consolidating the target vocabulary - it is actually so much more! The question card template provides an additional learning activity, with students applying their developing Spanish language knowledge creatively and practically, as they make game cards for the class - this is a really popular activity with my students. I often play too - students really do enjoy it when I join in, and they seem to work that little harder on their concentration, reading out loud and pronunciation. Students walk around the room, talking to each other in their best Spanish accent, sharing the information on their cards, until they have arranged the cards in the correct order. The game works best played against a timer, regularly over a longer-term series of lessons - can students beat beat their own time record? KS3 GERMAN GCSE VERBS ACTIVITIES German Common Verbs Ich habe… Wer hat… ? This is a whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, ideal for practising, reinforcing and consolidating 99 high-frequency German verbs. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking and reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. Active learning is a really successful way of developing both language skills and general confidence. The verbs are in the infinitive form, and the aim of the game is to create a German verb chain as quickly as possible. There are two games, each with a slightly different challenge: Challenge 1: verbs are in alphabetical order, with the question and answer format: Ich habe… Wer hat… ? Challenge 2: verbs are in random order, with the question and answer format: Hast du… Ja/Nein, ich habe… In both challenges, the English translation of the verb appears immediately below the German verbs, which maximizes opportunity for really embedding vocab. The game works just as well if the cards are placed on a longish table, or other flat surface. I created the game for my KS3 German learners, who are ready to move into KS4 German, but I’ve also played the game with my more advanced learners, who really enjoy ’going back to the start’ and having the opportunity to get up, walk about and talk - the games definitely provide some essential variety in learning activities. I’d definitely recommend you laminate the cards, despite the extra prep and expense. They’re far more learner-friendly, and they will last for absolutely years. Distribute the cards, one or two per student, depending on how many students you have in your group. I frequently use a timer when we play. Playing in teams, using either a single challenge, or with both challenges, is really popular - students find the competitive element really motivating and are genuinely keen to see which team can finish first, and whether they can beat their own time record. I always do some high-speed verb quiz oral warm-up and warm-down activities to really get the most out of the game, for example Wie sagt man SEIN auf Deutsch? or Richtig oder falsch - SEIN heißt TO BE auf Englisch? I’ve used these ‘quick conjugations’ for many years with my German students. My students find them to be a great way of practising, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate essential verbs in German. I’ve used them in a range of contexts such as independent work either in class time or at home, holiday refresher work, or individual activities for cover lessons. I tend to give my students regular opportunities to practise the conjugations during the whole schools year, and they find this really useful for mapping their own progress and developing their overall understanding of how German conjugation ‘works’. PRIMARY GERMAN KS3 GERMAN ANIMALS DEUTSCHE TIERE FLASHCARDS POSTERS These German animals display posters / flashcards create a fabulous German look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote German as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of German. They introduce learners to a range of animals in German from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how German words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. My younger German students really love the animals posters, and like to compare the German and English words. I’ve found that they also help very young children develop their growing understanding of the animal kingdom. We don’t necessarily learn all the animals, but we do use them for pronunciation and speaking practice, and for memory games too. Students definitely notice the different words for the, and ask why some animals are der, and others are die or das. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender. Use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. There are 20 animals using the masculine, feminine and neuter definite article, which again is a great opportunity to begin to compare German and English, looking particularly closely at capitalization of nouns. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as Bär and Wolf. The animals are: bear; bee; bird; butterfly; cat; dog; fish; fox; frog;horse; kangaroo; monkey; mouse; owl; parrot; rabbit; spider; squirrel; turtle/tortoise; wolf There are two sets of 20 9.5x11 (A4) portrait posters, two backgrounds to choose from: animal footprint or German flag. I like to share essential vocab that we can use in everyday language with my young learners from the beginning of their learning. We use them not only when we’re introducing and practising fruits (though I don’t actually select all 25 to learn in our main learning program), but also for developing French language skills and awareness in general. We talk a lot about the similarities and differences in the different languages, such as the definite article and gender, singular and plural, looking closely for cognates, and of course talking about the kinds of fruits we like or would like to try - star fruit is always a particular favourite! Sentence structure and word order may differ from students’ first and/or home language, so it’s important to provide them with opportunities to engage with language that moves beyond single-unit vocabulary as soon as possible. The questions are all in English, and range in complexity and challenge. I usually read through questions before my students work with the cards for the first time, to ensure that everyone understands any new or unknown language and structures. There are 35 fruits addressed in the task cards, and it’s unlikely that they are all in your teaching and learning plan. I always include additional vocabulary to add a little challenge, and to encourage students to think a little more creatively and independently. I’ve used definite, indefinite and partitive article, and singular and plural - this really helps students familiarize themselves with grammatical concepts, including the lack of noun gender in English, without explicit instruction. There are some translation questions too - both from French to English and English to French, which is a great introduction to translation for beginner to intermediate learners. I explain that there are several possible correct alternatives, as translation is not a word-for-word activity, which is definitely useful for them to know from the very beginning of their learning. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and grammatical concepts creatively and practically too - my students really enjoy creating questions for each other, and I encourage them to use the existing questions as a frame of reference as they create their own. The game is ideal for language learning, with a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking and reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice - I point out particular phonemes, sounds and accents too - such as the silent x on the plural of cheval : chevaux, and this is really useful at ***consolidating accurate French pronunciation. There are 25 animals featured in the game: bee : bird : butterfly : cat : caterpillar : chicken : cow : dog : dolphin : donkey : duck : fish : fox : frog : horse : kangaroo : monkey : mouse : owl : parrot : pig : rabbit : sheep : spider : tortoise / turtle All the animals may not be in my immediate or longer-term learning plan, but the learning objective of the game moves beyond simply learning or consolidating individual units of vocabulary or practising particular grammar points: it’s about actively learning new language too. The images are essentially visual prompts and clues, helping students infer meaning from context. The longer and more complex sentences really help students focus on reading out loud accurately, and think more carefully about language, and how to pronounce it correctly. There is implicit input on grammatical concepts such as singular and plural, adjectival agreement, gender, definite, indefinite and partitive articles and position of adjectives, either preceding or proceeding the particular noun, which can differ from language to language: I’ve found this is really useful for students who may be learning more than one language at a particular time. I have, who has? is a whole-group lively & communicative language learning game, perfect for practicing, reinforcing and refreshing a range of animals in Spanish. It’s great to learn some French Christmas vocabulary, though I don’t expect my learners to learn all the words necessarily - it’s equally important to introduce learners to different traditions and practices through the images, and develop their general French language skills confidently and happily. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. Learners walk around, talking to each other and working together to create the chain. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. The aim of the game is to create an alphabetical word chain - this can either be a ‘human’ chain, though I prefer to have learners work together to create an alphabetical line on a table, or even on the floor. There are 32 French Christmas words, arranged alphabetically. The first and last cards have J’ai la première carte and J’ai la dernière carte written on them. If you have fewer than thirty-two learners in your group, randomly select several to have more than one card. Learners love it when you play too! The words are all definite article, masculine and feminine, with singular and plural - this also offers a useful opportunity to talk about grammatical concepts if your learners are at that particular stage. Try to laminate the cards if you can - they’re far more learner-friendly, and they do last for absolutely years! Learners can also apply their language skills very practically (and artistically!) by creating their own cards on the template. We tend to play against a timer, often in teams (you’ll need a couple of sets for this) - learners really enjoy trying to beat their own record!
